Our History
and Mission
The San Jose Family
Shelter was established in 1986 by Concern for the Poor, a not-for-profit
organization, to provide shelter for the growing number of homeless families. In
1988, working with the City of San Jose and private donors, an empty warehouse
was converted to a facility to house families. Individual family rooms, a
commercial kitchen, showers, childcare rooms, offices, and classrooms were
constructed. The San Jose Family Shelter offered a safe place for 35
homeless families to live and receive services for up to 90
days. Seventy percent of the residents are children—the majority under 10 years
of age.
Family Supportive Housing is committed to the entire family. The three distinct service areas; the San José Family Shelter, Bridges AfterCare and GlennArt Arms encourage families to stay intact while addressing their needs for food, shelter, education and employment. A long held commitment to family is the guiding force of the entire organization which resonates in the heart
of everything Family Supportive Housing does.
There are a few options for extremely low income parents with children to live in our community. Family Supportive Housing offers a respite, an opportunity to make life altering changes, and
a system to aid in finding permanent housing.
